How To Maintain A Consistent Meditation Routine (even if you’ve fell off the wagon!)
Have you found that despite your best plans to meditate or have a regular practice, it just isn’t working out for you?
You know it’s good for you, you’ve actively felt the benefit to your energy and the calming relaxation it provides, but despite knowing that these great results lie at the end of a meditation, between finding the time in your busy schedule and trying your best to maintain the habit, it frequently falls by the wayside.
Before you know it, a positive resolution to do something to make you feel happier, has left you feeling guilty for not sticking to it – perhaps even abandoning a single meditation without even finishing it (it happens to us all!).
Please don’t beat yourself up – you’re not the problem, we just need to clearly define our intentions to make implementing them effortless, and I’m here to guide you through this, right from inspiration to a fully integrated part of who you are.
The Real Problem
The truth is, that when you’re a sensitive soul (and especially when you’re going through spiritual awakening) adding one more teeny obligation to your busy day can feel utterly brain crunching. And if it tips the scale, leaving you feeling overwhelmed or pressured to fit it in out of guilt, it’s not a healthy practice at all.
The key isn’t to avoid meditation, or even cut it out of your schedule, the key is to make it manageable – and the key to making it manageable isn’t to push yourself harder or use harsh self-criticism to judge yourself into taking action.
Tips For Setting Your Regular Meditation Practice:
Don’t let one missed day mean ‘failure’:
Whether your meditation practice is once per week or every day, if you do miss a day of practice (which sometimes will understandably happen) just get right back on the horse. Try to view the odd missed day as a tactical rest day to help you propel your practice further, rather than a failure that ends the momentum.
Link it to something you already regularly do:
An excellent way to make your new routine super easy to remember and more likely to be done is to pair it with something that you already do. This means you’re defining both when and perhaps even where you’ll do your meditation. The more clarity you have, the less decision making there will be in the moment and your practice can become effortless.
For example, if you always wake in the morning, then have a peppermint tea, you could meditate after your cup of tea.
Or, you create your routine for every evening before bed. Link brushing your teeth to your practice by knowing that once you’ve brushed your teeth, that is your cue to settle down to meditate.
Make it special:
This is optional, but you’re far more likely to complete something that you find really enjoyable. To get things off the ground at first, perhaps you light your favourite incense or meditate on a beautiful yoga mat.
So, what are you going to link your meditation to?
How are you going to make it just a little bit special?
Take a moment now to decide and simply try it out without pressure. Know that you can change it at any time, and that the process of continual refinement is the key to success.
How To Choose The Right Meditation For You
Selecting the right meditation can feel a wee bit overwhelming, and often we can get buried in indecision – another common roadblock to fulfilling your consistent practice.
Choose from your library based on how you feel that day. For example, if you feel ungrounded, use the Mother Earth Grounding Meditation. If you’re feeling powerless, use the Powerless to Powerful Reactivation. Got an aching heart chakra? Go for the Heart Pain Healing.
But of course, there are days when we feel generally ok – perhaps there is nothing sticking out that is particularly noticeable. In situations like these, browse through your library and simply look for what sticks out to you; a colour on the cover image, a word that seems meaningful. Don’t question it too much – just let your intuition guide you without having to know the reason why. Often times while you’re in the middle of enjoying your selected meditation, you’ll discover a topic or area of healing that is exactly what you need right now, and you’ll know your intuition was right on point.
